Zoe came to see me after a nasty fall had resulted in a broken arm. This was disturbing her sleep, reducing activity levels and the medications were causing digestive symptoms. Not surprisingly she reported low energy and low mood. We initially focused on a nutrient rich diet to support her recovery and reduce her symptoms. Within 4 weeks she was already starting to feel “much better”. Her consultant was “impressed” with her recovery. By the end of her 12 week programme she had been discharged and reported dramatically improved sleep, energy, mood and digestive symptoms.

Would you mind sharing the reasons (health issues/goals) that you came to see Helen.
I had broken my arm so I came to Helen to look for some nutritional support for my recovery. I wanted to build stronger bones as well as increase my Vitamin D intake.
And can you share the approach that Helen took?
I set out on a 12-week plan with Helen. This included tweaks to my diet and advice on how to supplement it to encourage the bone to repair. I met with Helen in person once a month and we had a phone call every couple of weeks in between that.
What are the main/key things that you learnt?
The importance of protein in the diet! Through reviewing and improving my diet I certainly had improved energy levels and the quality of my sleep was much better. I also learnt the importance of planning ahead in order to make the right food choices.
Did anything surprise you?
Discussions with Helen led me to consider other aspects that I hadn’t before, such as how hormones and my diet were interacting.
What changes to your health have you experienced?
The really crucial one was that the doctor was very happy with the speed with which my bone had regrown and I have no doubt that was due to the supplements in my diet. I also had a nerve issue which was rectified.
What are the changes that you have continued to make?
I have definitely continued with the principles of the programme, eating a lot more protein and am far better at not reaching for sugar when I am tired. I also eat a lot of fruit and vegetables – overall I can absolutely feel the long term benefits. Another aspect is that my whole family have benefitted due to the food I am cooking for them all – my husband now wants to start a programme with Helen too!

What did you enjoy the most about the programme?
The recipes are really varied and interesting so you never get stuck in a rut.

Definitely do it – there are no negatives! It had made some great changes for me – my sleep has improved and my skin has cleared.
